This workshop, The Editorial Process: An Editor's Perspective will guide attendees through the academic publishing process from manuscript preparation to promoting your published paper. Presenters will highlight best practices in developing the elements of a research paper and provide valuable tips to get your paper accepted. Topics will include:

  • Editorial decisions
  • How to craft a noticeable cover letter and powerful title and abstract
  • Tips for identifying and submitting a paper to the best journal
  • Reproducibility
  • Impact factors, pros and cons
  • Publishing ethics

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Rebecca Cooney, PhD - North American Editor, The Lancet
Rebecca Cooney, Ph.D. serves as the North American Editor of The Lancet, based out of the New York City office. In addition to her role as a senior editor, she writes and records podcasts for The United States of Health Blog (usa.thelancet.com). Dr. Cooney received her degree in Psychology from Stanford University in 2007, where her graduate work focused on the neural basis of cognitive and affective processes and the intergenerational transmission of depression. She continued this line of functional imaging research as a postdoctoral fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute. She has published numerous academic papers and book chapters. Prior to joining The Lancet family in 2012, she worked as a research scientist supporting labs at Stanford, Columbia, and The University of Miami, and as the Assistant and Associate Editor of The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Katja Brose, PhD - Editor of Neuron, Executive Editor-Neuroscience and Director of Reviews Strategy, Cell Press
As Editor of Neuron, the leading research journal in neuroscience, Katja represents the journal within the scientific community and is responsible for all aspects of the journal’s management, operations, and strategic vision. She earned her undergraduate degree in 1990 from Brown University, with a double concentration in Biology and European History. She received her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California-San Francisco in 2000. At UCSF, she worked with Dr. Marc Tessier-Lavigne and her doctoral work focused on axon guidance mechanisms in the developing spinal cord. In 2000, Katja joined Cell Press as a Senior Editor at Neuron. Cell Press is a division of Elsevier STM journal publishing and a leading publisher in the life sciences, and was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Neuron in 2004. In 2007, with Cell Press’ acquisition the Trends group of review titles, Katja was appointed as Executive Editor of the Neuroscience Portfolio, including Neuron, Trends in Neurosciences and Trends in Cognitive Sciences. She currently also serves as Editorial Director for Reviews Strategy for Cell Press is a member of the Cell Press Senior Management Team. She speaks frequently on topics related to neuroscience and scientific publishing and communication, publication ethics, and issues around rigor, reproducibility and research integrity.
